THE CORE

KILLIAN
KILLIAN
Half-Elf Eldritch Knight  ·  Age 31  ·  Head of the Rising
SpyFighterLeader
Killian doesn't waste words — or anything else. Every smile is calculated, every silence deliberate. He spent years running intelligence across three kingdoms before the arcane power crackling through his sword unsettled him in a way nothing else had. He leads the Rising not by force but by being something worth accumulating around. Carries his mother's carved figure, a paper with her address in Valdenmoor, and the weight of a name he doesn't yet know is his.
FEN
FEN
Halfling Arcane Trickster  ·  Age 24  ·  The Core
CharlatanRogueWildcard
Nobody knows where Fen is from — he's told seventeen versions and enjoyed every one. The magic arrived uninvited at twenty-two and he's been breaking its rules faster than he discovers them. Every answer is technically true. None of them are the whole truth. He calls this politeness. Sable chose him for the Gate mission. Vayne was not consulted.
LYRA
LYRA
Wood Elf Life Cleric  ·  Age 147  ·  The Core / The Soul
ClericThe LightCortevi
One hundred and forty-seven years of life produces a patience most people find unsettling. Lyra says three words where others use thirty, and is always the first to notice when something is wrong. She carries the Cortevi's shield and the order's deepest knowledge. She is also Vael's oldest operative — she believed his story and has been steering the Rising toward his ends without knowing it. The player does not know this yet.
VAYNE
VAYNE
Drow Great Old One Warlock  ·  Age 65  ·  The Core / The Soul
WarlockThe VesselThe Soul
Vayne made the pact eleven years ago and has spent every hour since working very hard to appear entirely fine. The whispers are constant. Her discipline is extraordinary — she sleeps two hours a night and fills the rest with study and the careful practice of control. She killed Calder Dunmore. He was protecting her without knowing her. She carries the weight correctly. The orb reads the builders' work and the Old One's architecture. She is the Soul's third key.

THE RISING — COMMAND

OSRA
OSRA
Human  ·  Age Late 40s  ·  Spymaster
BrinewickIntelligenceDrevyn's widow
Osra has been building the Rising's intelligence architecture before anyone had a name for it — eleven years of Drevyn's documentation, filed and understood and ready. She runs the Brinewick as HQ and Sera as lieutenant. She doesn't smile when Fen tries to be charming. She gives Tevan the recognition he needs at exactly the right moments. Drevyn would have loved this. She knows.
PIP
PIP
Human  ·  Age 13  ·  The Hand
The HandEyesBloodline
He was Pip until Fen shook his hand and called him his real name. Age thirteen, Folk Hero, DEX 18, always two gold fifty in his coat and charcoal on his hands. He documents everything — the Rising's full structure lives in his pages. Brock the grey dog decided he was his person and both decisions are permanent. He doesn't know his father is Vael. He doesn't know Killian is his uncle. He leads the Realm at the end of the story.
RELLA
RELLA
Human  ·  Age 15  ·  Head of The Eyes
EyesIntelConsigliere
At fourteen she was running fifteen people with a sophistication that would make most intelligence operations look casual — a communication system in chalk marks nobody else can read. Sharp, lethal, unmatched sense of right and wrong. Morrow's field contact. Blood-sibling to Garrett through shared grief, not romance. She is Tevan's future consigliere and the Den in the woods east of Caelmoor is her territory.
MORROW
MORROW
Human  ·  Age Early 40s  ·  Head of The Body
CompactCouncillorThe Body
She fed secrets to Vael for eleven years — ambition finding the wrong door. She turned when Vayne appeared as Aldric and the mathematics changed. Three conditions: officials named, protection, a role in what comes next. She said Caelmoor for Caelmoor for the first time and meant it — though what she means is My Caelmoor for My Caelmoor. She takes the Compact from the inside and makes it mean something different. Long game: she runs the city.

THE CELLS

BREM
BREM
Human  ·  Age Late 40s  ·  Head of The Muscle
MuscleHollow20 Years
Twenty years in the Hollow — every enforcer in the east and south quarters, every passage, every schedule. He was waiting for something to mean before Osra found him. Page Three named the Compact official who buried his daughter's case. He carried it for three days. The hardening that comes when something sharp replaces something soft. He is methodical, patient, and the most reliable person in any room he enters.
LENA
LENA
Human  ·  Age Mid 40s  ·  Head of The Veins
VeinsMarketIntel
Fourteen stalls across Caelmoor's markets — bakers, cloth merchants, a cobbler, two butchers, a woman who knows every household by purchasing habits. She built three years of commercial intelligence without knowing that's what it was called. The Compact doesn't watch pie stalls. Her people don't carry weapons and never will. She named The Veins and tested it against what she'd built, found it fit, and moved on.
ALDARA
ALDARA
Tiefling  ·  Age Indeterminate  ·  The Soul / The Keeper
SoulKeeperCortevi
Last Keeper of the Cortevi order. Held two years in a room at Pellar Street by Vael — fed minimally, memory tampered with. She made herself as small as possible and got very good at it. When Lyra came through the door she said You're not his. Something released in her face when she learned the door was sealed. She carries the order's book, the wooden box, and 730 marks scratched into a piece of wood. Now she is the Rising's institutional memory.
MAREN
MAREN
Gnome  ·  Age Oldest surviving  ·  The Soul / The Archivist
SoulArchivistCortevi
Oldest surviving member of the Cortevi. Small and compactly built, white hair cropped short, eyes that have been reading people so long that reading is indistinguishable from looking. She walked into the Brinewick and read everything in the room in ten seconds. Has been running a covert operation inside Vael's network alone for decades. Sable chose her shoulder within thirty seconds of arrival. She stopped noticing. Third key for the builders' record.

THE FIGHTING PARTIES

DAV
DAV
Human Ranger / Fighter  ·  Age ~34  ·  Gate Party / Muscle
RangerGateShadow
Six years at Vethara's Gate garrison — he knows the shepherd paths in the dark and can correct the survey maps. Brem recruited him with seven words and it was enough. He trains Tevan every morning: Again. Shadow the black wolf reconnects with him at the Gate, silver at the muzzle, yellow eyes, the specific patience of something that has made a decision. He is the kind of person for whom enough is a specific quantity.
GARRETT
GARRETT
Human  ·  Age Early 30s  ·  The Muscle
MusclePellar StreetGarrison button
Pellar Street security, Dockside Lane operations, the soft sell on Rast when the time comes. Large, calm, been doing this longer than you — the South Hollow lead man read him correctly and took his hand off Rast's shoulder. He sent a healer for Rast's crew because we hurt them doing our job. Carries the garrison button after Rowan's death. Blood-sibling to Rella through shared grief. Forever in blood.
CARA
CARA
Half-Elf  ·  Age Mid 20s  ·  Cortevi / Maren-trained
CorteviThe Sacrifice
Maren trained her in Thornmere over four years in secret — not as knowledge but as muscle memory, the things you absorb young enough. She is simply kind. A dropped bundle. A child in a market. The mill dog. The reader accumulates this without realizing it. She and Tevan recognized each other immediately across the full table. When Vael takes Tevan she gets there first. She puts herself between him and what Vael sends. She shapes him as a leader for life.
ROWAN
ROWAN
Human  ·  Age 18 (reads 16)  ·  The Eyes / Gate Party
EyesGate
Son of a garrison soldier killed at Vethara's Gate fifteen years ago under circumstances no report could categorize. He carried his father's garrison button on a cord and went north to find out what happened. Reliable, present, not flashy — shows up when he says he will, sees what he says he sees. You look sixteen. I know. It's useful. Died at Vethara's Gate, 13 DS. The file was thin. Tevan's page for him is not thin.

THE EYES

PELL
PELL
Human  ·  Age ~14  ·  The Eyes
EyesEast HollowSouth Road
One of Rella's faster Eyes. East Hollow born, sharp and short. She spotted the Thread checkpoint on the south road before the city was fully awake on 4 DS — fast enough to find Alfie two streets east and get back to her rooftop in time to watch it unfold. South road rotation. Her eyes move faster than her expression does, always on the next thing before the current one resolves.
OREN
OREN
Human  ·  Age ~15  ·  The Eyes
EyesSurveillanceReliable
The kind of face you pass on a street and don't remember, which is exactly his value. Reliable and present — he watched Rast directly for three days after the Pellar Street encounter, got close enough to hear the conversation with Cord, and reported accurately without embellishment. He shows up when he says he will. He sees what he says he sees. Future role in the Rising expands as the story develops.
BRIN
BRIN
Halfling  ·  Age ~13-14  ·  The Eyes
EyesHalflingBrinewick
Present at the Brinewick from early in the campaign. Small even for a halfling, which makes her invisible in exactly the way the Eyes require — people read her as younger than she is and stop paying attention. Found with Oren near the tannery and brought to Rella's network. Future role in the Rising expands through Book Two. She watches everything and files it without appearing to.

ANTAGONISTS

VAEL
VAEL
Half-Elf  ·  Age Late 40s  ·  The Thread / Founder
ThreadAntagonistBloodline
Founded the Thread thirty-five years ago to free what was behind the door — not from ambition but from grief. He has been hearing Tevan III's voice from the other side since childhood, weaponized across decades. He is Killian's father and Tevan VI's grandfather. He uses the name Vael because Tevan is too close to the grief. His blind spot: he planned for the sword. He did not plan for the team. The door is sealed. He is reassessing.
ALDRIC (CALDER DUNMORE)
ALDRIC (CALDER DUNMORE)
Human  ·  Age Mid 40s  ·  The Thread / Auditor
ThreadAuditorDEAD
The Thread's auditor for eleven years under the name Aldric. His real name was Calder Dunmore, formerly Valdenmoor city watch. He did terrible things in that role and made peace with them badly and in the dark. Also: kept Tevan low on the correction list, flagged Vayne as handle with caution, watched over Killian's mother for two years. He chose what he could. Vayne killed him. He was protecting her without knowing her. Both things are true.

THE OTHERS

DREVYN ASHCOURT
DREVYN ASHCOURT
Human  ·  Age ~60 at death  ·  Information Broker / DECEASED
DeceasedFoundationBrinewick
Caelmoor's most powerful information broker. Found dead in his locked study — body perfectly preserved, mind completely gone, every secret erased. He prepared for his own death. He built the foundation of everything the Rising stands on across eleven years of careful cultivation. He drank at the Brinewick every Thirdsday for eleven years and never missed. To Drevyn, said Osra. Who knew everything. And spent it well.
RAST
RAST
Human  ·  Age ~40  ·  North Hollow / Potential Asset
HollowIndependentPotential Asset
North Hollow crew leader, twenty years in the streets, larger than his crew and weathered by all of it. He walked into 14 Pellar Street thinking it was empty and put his weapon down himself when the mathematics changed — that takes ego management. Deliberately ignorant about what he stumbled into. Filed the healer Vayne sent for his crew. That memory is doing slow work. Garrett approaches him when the time comes. Not yet. But closer than yesterday.

SYMBOLS & MARKS

THE BUILDERS' SYMBOL
THE BUILDERS' SYMBOL
Ancient geometric seal predating written language. Appears on the door, the key, the armory weapons, and the communication points. Between-silver-and-gold when active — the color of light before anything decided what color light should be. All of it moving when you look directly at it. Vael corrupts and inverts it for the Thread's communication circles.
THE CORTEVI SYMBOL
THE CORTEVI SYMBOL
Symbol of the Cortevi order, founded by Tevan I four hundred years ago. A bare tree — roots and branches given equal weight, what holds below mirroring what reaches above. Warm gold, steady pulse. Appears on Lyra's shield and in the Erryn Vaul. The order has been stripped to near nothing — what's left is the root system and the bare branches. Still standing. Still holding.
VAEL'S CORRUPTED SYMBOL
VAEL'S CORRUPTED SYMBOL
The builders' geometric symbol inverted and turned against its purpose. Same architecture, deliberately wrong — the center collapsed inward rather than radiating outward, consuming rather than containing. Reddish wrong-colored light. Used for the Thread's seven communication points across the realm. Each closed circle concentrates power toward Valdenmoor — the one Vael controls.
THE RISING'S MARK
THE RISING'S MARK
An arrow ascending — angular, workman-like, made by people building something as they go. Angular chevron wings, arrowhead pointing up, forked fletching at the base. An homage to Ren the Wayfinder, the builders' hawk and the Rising's communications thread. Not ancient, not finished, not elegant. The only symbol in the set without a border — the Rising doesn't have edges yet. It's still growing.
